Higher education is not always a straightforward process. There will be times when you will doubt your decision to continue because of poor grades, too many assignments, and personal difficulties. Your actual character comes to light at these pivotal times, not in your accomplishments but in how you respond to failures.

Keep in mind that everyone you look up to has had periods of uncertainty. They are unique not because they don’t fail but rather because of how they handle it. When you want to give up, stand back and consider why you had set out on this path in the first place. Only your current situation has changed, not your goals and desires.

Think of every obstacle as a test of your fortitude rather than an obstacle. If you are having trouble with a certain subject, ask your lecturers, peers or tutors for assistance. Consult the counselling services at your university if personal matters are interfering with your academic performance. All you have to do is ask for help; there are always resources available.

Think about who you want to be in the future before you consider giving up. Will you regret not trying harder or will you look back and be grateful that you persisted? Making the choice to keep going in spite of obstacles helps you develop the grit and character you’ll need in the workplace. Keep in mind that your degree is evidence of your capacity to overcome obstacles and see projects through to completion, not merely your academic success.
