The flexibility of college allows you to take control of your future, make choices, and experiment with new concepts. However, this freedom also carries responsibility. Every action you take has repercussions, including ones you choose not to take. When things go wrong, will you accept responsibility for them or will you seek out reasons to avoid responsibility?
Being accountable entails understanding that your decisions affect how your life turns out. Blaming the lecturer or the system won't make a difference if you don’t finish assignments on time, and end up failing the course. If you make bad financial choices and wind up in debt, it won't go away if you ignore it. Acknowledging mistakes and making better decisions in the future are more important aspects of learning to take responsibility than being flawless.
A poor choice can have just as much of an impact as inaction. Your ability to progress can be hampered by passing up opportunities, not taking chances, or not making future plans. You could struggle after graduation, if you don't work at networking, internship applications, and career goal-setting. Making the right decision now avoids regret later.
A sign of maturity is accepting accountability for your deeds and inactions. You will face challenges in life, but taking responsibility for your choices—good or bad—allows you to develop and learn. You will be more equipped to handle the challenges of achievement, disappointment and adulthood the sooner you embrace accountability.
